GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE August, 1990
Just Jocks
G.I.F.T. '90 is huge success
Cleveland's fifth annual Gay Invitational Fellowship Tournament was held the weekend of June 9-10. The Hospitality Suite at the Airport Marriott opened on Friday, June 8, as the committee welcomed and registered 210 bowlers from 15 cities in the United States and Canada. Most participants seemed surprised at the yo-yos which were given out instead of the usual Tshirts; and impromptu "how to" classes popped up in various sections of the suite. Many of the registrants eventually made it to Keys nightclub for the annual North Coast Welcome Party, and "Vogued" into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Bowling competition began on Saturday at Buckeye Lanes, home of the PBABudweiser Open. Lora C. (Akron) scored a 725 to nail down the singles championship, with Al Manning (Detroit) second at 711, and Ken Sparks (Detroit) third with a 692. Doubles followed with the team of Dan H./Tony W. (Cleveland) in first place with a 1386. Bev K./Bob Cobb (Cleveland/Pit-
tsburgh) came in second with a 1337, and Estella Sutton./Selma Tansey (Pittsburgh) were third with a 1323.
A "Bon Voyage" cocktail party was held at Legends prior to the eagerly anticipated fantasy cruise on the Goodtime II, which departed from the E. 9th St. pier at 8:00 p.m. The 211⁄2 hour trip treated the 409 bowlers, guests, and Cleveland friends to a tour through the Flats entertainment district, as well as onto Lake Erie. For virtually everyone, this cruise has proven to be the highlight of the tournament weekend in Cleveland. You haven't really seen the city until you've seen it at night from the lake! U4ia nightclub hosted a post-cruise party with free admission and dancing until 4:00 a.m.
Team competition began at 11:00 am on Sunday. Of the 42 five-person teams competing, Tournament Trash (Cleveland/Buffalo) proved to be the best by just two pins over Flying Fruit Fantasy (Cleveland), 3177-3175. Five Girls With Brain Death (Toronto) placed third with 3121.
The G.I.F.T. '90 committee was greeted by a sea of humanity dressed in black and white at the awards banquet,
where nearly $10,000 in prize money and raffle prizes was handed out. Special guest "Svetlana Ludmilla Gorbachev❞ helped present the raffle prizes which ranged from a six lb. can of mixed fruit to a combination TV/VCR.
Ken Sparks (6-200 games) took AllEvents honors with a 2047. Rich G. (Akron) was second with 2029, and Tessie Glover (Tor) came in third with 2005. Ben R. (Cleveland) won the lower scratch division with a 1483, while Ken Sparks took the upper bracket with 1867.
Al Manning's 278 was the highest of the 136 "200 games", and the highest 3-game series was 676 bowled by Nelson F. (Cleveland)
Donations were collected throughout the weekend, and a check for $500 was given to the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center of Greater Cleveland.
After the banquet, many of the bowlers attended a farewell party at Over the Rainbow.
The committee, although exhausted, is already looking forward to G.I.F.T. '91, to be held the weekend of June 14-16.
Softball at mid-season; Nasty Boys ahead
by Deborah K. Lanham
The North Coast Athletic Association's (NCAA) Sunday softball league is nearing the end of first-half competition.
The NCAA league, which is in its eighth season, consists of six teams, and will play 18 games per team. Many of the league's teams are coed, however no requirement exists for an even number of men and women.
League commissioner Al Taylor is excited about the 1990 season goals. “The whole intent is two things: return the league to the stature of respect it once had within the community, and provide a fun forum for the gay community," he said. "I'm happy with a lot of new
people."
Leading the league in batting average are Ken R. (Club Body Center) and Jesse B. (Mustangs) deadlocked at .875. Also tied in this category are teammates Kevin H. and Tom B. of Mustangs with .800 average. Best in Runs Batted In (RBI's) are Ken R. (Club Body) with 31 and Tom B. (Mustangs) with 22 RBI's.
Home run leaders are Ken R. (Club Body) slugging nine and teammate Aaron H. with seven round-trippers. Leaders in runs scored are Club Body teammates Curt G. with 21 and Monty E. with 18. 1
The league plays at Brookside Park, off Denison and Fulton from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. at diamond number 7, behind Rose and Elder fields. Softball fans are

Gay World Series in Pittsburgh
by Deborah K. Lanham
Pittsburgh's Steel City Softball League will host the 1990 North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance Softball World Series. The series, August 19 to 26, is expected to be the largest in NAGAAA history.
The Steel City Softball League joined the NAGAAA in 1983 and is one of the smaller city affiliates. The series will be sponsored by Stroh's, USAir, American Express Travel and Coca-Cola on the national level. Augmenting the national sponsors will be the Pittsburgh Tavern Guild and the Lambda Foundation.
NAGAAA was created in 1977 as a national organization of men and women promoting softball, good health and a positive image of the gay lifestyle. The NAGAAA has experienced a steady growth, from its humble beginnings in San Francisco to a current membership of 21 cities in the U.S. and Canada.
In 13 years the NAGAAA has grown from a single open division made of teams comprised of men and women or teams of exclusively men to three divisions. The Women's Division was added in 1985 to provide open competition of predominantly lesbian softball. The first Women's Softball World Series '85 was held in Milwaukee and was won by the San Diego Spoilers. A Recreational Division was added in 1989 and will be a part of the World Series competition. For more information on the NAGAAA World Series contact Nancy Pribich, 606 N. Negley Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15206; (412) 362-1247.▼
